Gamma-ray Bursts from Baryon Decay in Neutron Stars Ue-li and Abraham Pen Loeb

چکیده
The standard unbroken electroweak theory is known to erase the baryon number. The baryon number symmetry can be restored in the core of a neutron star if its density diverges via gravitational instability due to a binary merger event. We argue that for certain double Higgs models with discrete symmetries this process may result in an expanding self-sustained burning front that would convert the entire neutron matter into radiation. This process would release D1054 ergs in electromagnetic radiation over D10~4 s with negligible baryonic contamination. The resulting Ðreball would have all of the properties necessary to produce a c-ray burst as a result of its interaction with ambient interstellar gas. The subsequent Higgs decay would produce a millisecond burst of D1052 ergs in D100 GeV neutrinos, which might be observable. The above mechanism may also cause electroweak baryogenesis in the early universe, which gives rise to the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry today. A Model of Short Gamma-Ray Bursts: Heated Neutron Stars in Close Binary Systems
In this paper we present a model for the short (< 1 second) population of gamma-ray bursts. In this model heated neutron stars in a close binary system near its last stable orbit emit a large amount of neutrinos (∼ 10 ergs). A fraction of these neutrinos will annihilate to form an ee pair plasma wind which will, in turn, expand and recombine to photons which make the gamma-ray burst. We study n...

Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) explosions from the first generation of stars offer an exciting opportunity to probe the epoch of reionization. Clues about how and when the intergalactic medium was ionized can be read off their UV emission spectrum. Roughly a percent of all GRBs should be strongly gravitationally lensed by intervening stars. A microlensed lightcurve can be inverted to reconstruct the sur...
متن کاملHot Neutron Stars as a Source for Gamma Ray Bursts at Cosmological Distance Scales
We discuss the possibility that the sources for gamma ray bursts are hot neutron stars at cosmological distance scales. The temperature of such stars would be T ∼ 1MeV. Such hot stars can produce an electromagnetic blast wave provided that the ratio of baryon and photon numbers NB/Nγ ≤ 10. The typical time scale for such blasts, the total luminosity, and correlation of gamma ray energy with tim...
متن کاملAccretion-Induced Conversion of High-Velocity Neutron Stars to Strange Stars in Supernovae and Implications for Gamma-Ray Bursts
We present a new model for gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) that are not only associated with supernovae but also have small baryon contamination. In this model, we assume a newborn neutron star to move outward at a kick velocity of ∼ 10 km s in the supernova ejecta. We find that such a neutron star still hypercritically accretes its surrounding supernova matter. Once the stellar mass increases to some ...
